The Seawater Greenhouse
Inspiration
The Seawater Greenhouse is a supremely elegant example of sustainable design. Designed by Charlie Paton, it is a greenhouse for arid coastal regions and, apart from creating an optimised growing environment, it produces a surplus of distilled water from seawater using just the sun, the wind and a tiny amount of energy for pumping.
The surplus water can be used to restore barren land to biological activity. In this way, the Seawater Greenhouse goes beyond 'sustainable' and represents 'restorative design'. We are taking these ideas further with Charlie Paton on the Sahara Forest project.
