Abalone House

The Abalone house is an ongoing study into applying shell structures to domestic architecture. Guastavino vaulting (also known as ‘Catalan vaulting’) is very similar to the microstructure of abalone shell in which multiple layers of calcium carbonate discs are held together with a polymer mortar to produce an incredibly strong material – while at a chemical level it is almost identical to blackboard chalk, through its microstructure it achieves 3000 times the toughness.

This project aims to develop a shell structure which celebrates the possibilities of this relatively under-explored form of construction.
